The seven details every football tournament poster needs, the right sizes for WhatsApp, Instagram and print, and how to turn poster views into registrations.
A good football tournament poster answers seven questions before anyone has to ask: what sport and format, when, where, how many teams, how much it costs, how to register and who to call. Get those right and the design can be simple. Get one wrong and your WhatsApp fills up with the same question fifty times.
Search for a football tournament poster and you will find thousands of templates. Most of them look great and still miss half of this information. This guide covers what goes on the poster, in what order, at what size, and how to turn it into registrations instead of likes.
What to Put on a Football Tournament Poster

Every football tournament poster needs these seven details, in roughly this order from top to bottom:
- Name and sport. Lead with the sport and format ("5-a-side football"), then the event name. "Sunday 5s Cup" means nothing to someone scrolling past if they cannot tell it is football.
- Date and start time. Day, date and reporting time. Write "Sun 9 Nov, 7 am reporting" and not "this weekend" or "coming soon".
- Venue. Venue name plus the area or road. Teams decide in seconds whether the travel is worth it.
- Format and team size. Number of teams, players per squad (for example 6 with 1 sub) and the format: knockout, or groups then knockout.
- Entry fee and prizes. The fee per team in rupees, and the prize pool if you have one. Hiding the fee makes serious teams skip you.
- One way to register. A QR code or one short link, with the closing date. Not a link, a phone number and a Google Form all at once.
- Contact. One number for questions. More numbers means more confusion.
Optional extras that help: age limits, studs or turf shoes only, a "limited slots" line if it is true, and the logos of your venue or sponsors at the bottom.
Football Poster Design: Keep It Readable
People see your poster as a thumbnail in a WhatsApp group or a feed. If they cannot read it at that size, the design does not matter.
- One big headline. The single most important fact (often the prize pool or the date) should be the largest text. Everything else is smaller.
- Three text sizes at most. A headline, a subheading and body text. More than that looks cluttered.
- High contrast. White or yellow on a dark background reads best. Avoid thin fonts over busy photos.
- Short lines. "₹2,000 per team" beats "Registration fee of Rs. 2000/- per team to be paid in advance".
- Real football in the image. A photo of your own turf or last season's winners beats a stock image of a stadium your players will never see.
Football Tournament Poster Background: Photo or Plain?
A plain dark background with bold text is the safest football tournament poster background. It reads at any size and prints cleanly.
A photo background works when you fade it. Put a dark overlay of 40 to 60 percent over the photo so the text on top stays readable. Good choices are a photo of your venue at night under the lights, players from your last event, or a close-up of a ball on turf. Avoid photos with lots of small detail behind the text, such as crowds or nets.
If you use a photo you did not take, check its license. Free libraries such as Pexels allow commercial use, but sites that only show previews do not.
Football Tournament Poster Sizes for WhatsApp, Instagram and Print

Make one design, then export it in each size your teams will see.
- 4:5 portrait (1080 x 1350 px): the best all-rounder for Instagram posts and WhatsApp chats.
- 9:16 story (1080 x 1920 px): Instagram stories and WhatsApp status. Keep key text out of the top and bottom 250 px, where the app puts its own buttons.
- 1:1 square (1080 x 1080 px): Facebook posts and WhatsApp groups.
- A4 print (2480 x 3508 px at 300 dpi): for the turf notice board or a sports shop counter. A football tournament banner for the venue fence is the same design stretched wide, so keep the layout simple enough to reflow.
Football Tournament Poster Template vs Making Your Own
Template sites such as Canva and Adobe Express are quick if you already have a design eye. The catch is that you still have to type every detail by hand, and when something changes (a new date, slots filling up) you edit and re-export every size.
On MyGameGrid, the poster comes from the tournament itself. Open your tournament page and tap Social Studio. Pick the Announcement template, choose the Impact, Block or Classic design, and switch between 1:1 Square, 9:16 Story and 4:5 Portrait. The name, venue, date, entry fee and prize pool fill in from your tournament, and the Register now card carries a QR code that opens your tournament page. Download the PNG or share it to WhatsApp with its caption.
The poster keeps up with you. If you have not set a prize pool, the headline switches to "slots left" once half your slots are taken, and when every slot is gone the card shows Registrations closed instead of the QR code. Other templates cover the match day info, a countdown and the schedule, and after the final the Champions poster fills in the winner and runner-up for you.
Already have a poster from a designer? Use Upload a poster on the create tournament form. MyGameGrid reads the details off the poster (name, date, venue, entry fee) and fills in the form, and the poster becomes your cover image. Check the filled details before you publish, because text read from an image can be wrong.
Turn Poster Views Into Registrations
A poster only works if the next step is easy. A few habits that fill slots faster:
- Post it in waves. Announce three to four weeks out, post a "slots filling" update when you pass half, and a last call two days before the deadline.
- Use one link everywhere. The same registration link on the poster, in the caption and in your bio, so you can see where teams come from.
- Collect the fee at registration. Teams that have paid show up. Our 5-a-side tournament checklist covers fee collection and the rest of the planning.
- Reuse the winners' photo. Next season's poster is stronger with this season's champions on it.
Frequently Asked Questions
What should a football tournament poster include?
The sport and format, the event name, date and reporting time, venue with area, number of teams and squad size, entry fee and prizes, one way to register with a closing date, and one contact number.
What is the best size for a football tournament poster?
1080 x 1350 px (4:5) works best for Instagram posts and WhatsApp chats. Export a 1080 x 1920 px (9:16) version for stories and status, and an A4 file at 300 dpi if you plan to print it.
Can I make a football tournament poster for free?
Yes. Free template tools such as Canva work, and on MyGameGrid the Social Studio makes posters from your tournament details for free, with a QR code that links to registration.
What is a good background for a football poster design?
A dark plain background is the safest. If you use a photo of your venue or players, add a dark overlay of 40 to 60 percent so the text stays readable.
Should I put the entry fee on the poster?
Yes. Teams compare fees before they ask anything else. Leaving it off means more messages and fewer serious entries.
