Knockout vs Round Robin vs Group Stage

Pick a knockout tournament for speed, a round robin tournament for fairness, and a group stage with a knockout for both. Three numbers decide it: teams, pitches and hours. This guide shows the match count for every format, so you can choose before you take a single registration.

Knockout vs Round Robin vs Group Stage at a Glance

For 8 teams, a knockout tournament needs 7 matches, a round robin tournament needs 28, and a group stage with a knockout needs 15. Fewer matches means a shorter day. More matches means a fairer result.

• Format: Matches, 8 teams · Matches, 16 teams · Games per team · Best for
• Knockout: 7 · 15 · 1 to 3 (8 teams), 1 to 4 (16 teams) · One-day events and big fields
• Round robin: 28 · 120 · 7 (8 teams), 15 (16 teams) · Leagues and 4 to 6 teams
• Group stage + knockout: 15 · 31 · Up to 5 (8 teams), up to 6 (16 teams) · 8 to 16 teams in a day or a weekend

Group stage numbers use groups of 4, the top 2 from each group, and no 3rd-place match. A 3rd-place match adds 1 match to a knockout or a group stage with a knockout.

How a Knockout Tournament Works

A knockout tournament is a bracket where the loser of every match goes out. It always needs one match fewer than the number of teams: 8 teams play 7 matches and 16 teams play 15.

What you get:

• Speed: the fastest way to find a champion.
• Simple to follow: every match matters and everyone understands a bracket.
• The catch: in an 8-team bracket, 4 teams play only one match. One bad game ends the day.

Teams do not need to be a power of two. With 12 teams in a 16-team bracket, 4 teams get a bye and skip round 1. You still play 11 matches. Seed the strongest teams apart so they meet late, and add a 3rd-place match to give the losing semi-finalists one more game.
